Free speech up in smoke - The Daily Texan - Opinion

Free speech up in smoke - The Daily Texan - Opinion: "The United States Senate will soon vote on a proposed Constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, including other forms of 'desecration' of that revered symbol. But the flag is just that, a symbol (desecration only refers to religious symbols, by the way).

Should we ban the destruction of other memorabilia that includes Old Glory? Will the shattering of a patriotic coffee mug become a federal offense? Will using your Desert Storm tank top as a car washrag earn you a fine?

As U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, said, 'If the flag needs protection at all, it needs protection from members of Congress who value the symbol more than the freedoms that the flag represents.' "

Fake Town Meetings

NY Times on Fake Town Hall Meetings

"As in the president's "town meeting" campaign appearances last year, the audiences are stacked with prescreened fans; any dissenters who somehow get in are quickly hustled away by security goons. But as The Washington Post reported last weekend, the preparations are even more elaborate than the finished product suggests; the seeming reality of the event is tweaked as elaborately as that of a television reality show. Not only are the panelists for these conversations recruited from administration supporters, but they are rehearsed the night before, with a White House official playing Mr. Bush."

Fake News

Patron Saint of Bush's Fake News

"JUST when Americans are being told it's safe to hand over their savings to Wall Street again, he's baaaack! Looking not unlike Chucky, the demented doll of perennial B-horror-movie renown, Ken Lay has crawled out of Houston's shadows for a media curtain call."
